Jubilee Celebrations, Glasgow & Edinburgh, August 2012

I don’t mean the Queen’s, but the Club’s, (just as important). In the club’s 60th. Anniversary year we will be having various extra events to celebrate this special year. One in particular is going to need forward planning; I would like to organise a weekend trip to Glasgow and Edinburgh, primarily for the Edinburgh Tattoo, which by all accounts is a fantastic spectacle not to be missed.

I will need to apply for the tickets for the Tattoo by October of this year, and I will not know until later if we have been lucky enough to get any. They will cost approx. £50 depending on seating allocated when I apply. I will need your names and cheques for this ASAP please.

If you are not interested in the tattoo you could still have a great weekend with Friday night on the town in Glasgow, then Saturday night on the town in Edinburgh. With plenty of pubs, bars, and restaurants to choose from it could be a very lively weekend. There should be time during the two days to also visit the shops, art galleries and museums of both these interesting and lively cities.

There will be a more details nearer the time if we have sufficient numbers to run the trip. I am hoping to be able to cost the hotel and coach price for less than £100. I will be booking a good standard central hotel in Glasgow. We will be travelling from the local area around 9am on the Friday, hoping to get to Glasgow by mid afternoon. On the Saturday the coach would leave for Edinburgh around midday. I am hoping to have tickets for the last show, which ends with a fire work display, the coach will then return to Glasgow. We will not be able to leave Glasgow on the Sunday until late morning, depending on the driver’s hours. Hopefully we will have a couple of hours stop on the way back before arriving home late Sunday.

60th Anniversary

2012 will see the 60th anniversary of the founding of Burnley Mountaineering Club and, as we did for the 40th & 50th years, we will have special events to celebrate this auspicious occasion.

Already a special Dinner has been booked at Townley Hall in June for which we will have a guest speaker.

High House Hut has been booked, in June for a ’60 Tops’ weekend, we hope to have members on 60 Lake District summits on the Saturday and then return to High House for a Barbeque. This proved very successful for the 40th & 50th even though we ran out of water in 1992 and had to wash in the river!

A weekend in Glasgow with an option of tickets for the Edinburgh Tattoo on the Saturday night is planned for August 2012.

60th Anniversary booklet, this is only possible with support of the members, we want you to submit articles and photographs that represent club events.

In previous years we have held a games night at the Clarion, but we want suggestions from the members for other ways that we can celebrate the 60th year.

YHA Weekend. Harbour Grange Youth Hostel, Whitby. 28-30 October

Because this Halloween weekend as proved so popular in the past I am opening the list up early this year. This will allow anyone who is unsuccessful at getting on the list to make alternative arrangements for accommodation.

I will take names on the April trip, and it will be the first 24 names with deposits that are successful. I think this is the easiest and fairest way for me to do this. For anyone who has to make alternative arrangements they can still join the “official” group on the Saturday night for the fancy dress party in the Harbour Grange Hostel.

There will be more details nearer the time. The deposit is £10 pp.

Spring Social. Morris Dancers, Colne. Saturday 7th Mat 7:30pm

I am staying local again with the Morris Dancers in Colne this time. It is part of the sizzling pub chain. There is no formal dining room but good value pub food. There are various special offers each month so I will be watching for the May ones coming out as I am now on there mailing list.

The pub as a bright lively atmosphere with lots of room for casual dining. There may, or may not, be live music on the night .If you don’t wish to have a meal still come along to meet your friends for the evening because any place the BMC go proves to be very entertaining.

If you are interested please see me in the club this evening because I will need to let the Morris dancers have an idea of the number of people who want a meal. I have printed the pubs special offer for march if anyone wants to try it. The voucher can be used any day of the week at any time until the 31st of March.

Newtonmore Weekend. March 2011.

Above Coire an t-Sneachda on the ridge between Cairn Lochan and Cairn Gorm. Another great weekend at Newtonmore, with considerably better conditions than 2010 and nigh on perfect weather on the Saturday. I'm sure lots of great pictures were taken like this one from John Wilmot above Coire an t-Sneachda. So come on, lets see them; email your pictures to me at webmaster@burnleymountaineering.co.uk and I'll add them to the site.
